How Safe Is Dental Sedation for Kids?

Any kind of dental procedure may be painful and when it is needed for young children particularly during wisdom teeth extraction or any other dental problem, it is very difficult for them to bear the pain. Therefore, sedation is given prior to the procedure so that the pain can be considerably reduced.

However, with general anesthesia, where certain drug is administered can cause temporary loss of sense.  Parents prefer safety for their children and therefore if the procedure is for long duration and complex in nature then sedation is needed. Sedation can certainly help to reduce the stress level of the child and the dentist can also continue with the procedure undisturbed.

Types of sedation

  • Oral sedation

Oral sedation is usually administered through mouth or nose, as soon as the patient arrives in the clinic. These medicines take about 20 minutes to show their effect. With oral sedation the patients do not fall sleep, but remain calm and relaxed.

  • Nitrous oxide

This is also known as laughing gas. It is also often given to children to keep them calm during the procedure. A mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide is given through mask and within 5 minutes, the patient feels relaxed and experience euphoric feeling. After the procedure is complete pure oxygen is given to the patient to clear out the remaining nitrous oxide.

  • Intravenous

Intravenous sedation is given with injection into the veins of patient. Most of college station dentist usually prefer this type of sedation. Nitrous oxide is used so that the child may go to sleep and thereafter the needle is inserted in the vein on child’s hand. A tube is also inserted in the throat so that patient can breathe properly.

Before sedation

Before sedation parents are advised to restrict food and drink so that children are made to prepare for sedation. Sedation may pose certain risks if there is presence of food in stomach and the patient may vomit during the procedure. Patients are also advised to wear loose fitting dress so that proper monitoring can be attached. Parents must also let the dentist know about the medical history of the child whether he is taking any medicine or herbal supplement.

Parents also need to tell their child to stay calm and relaxed. They bring their favorite toy or any other thing that can provide comfort to the child.

Dentists also check all the parameters like blood pressure, blood oxygen level, heart rate and body temperature before giving them any sedation.
